The Sphinx, in greek mythology was a creature with the head of a woman, the body of a lion, and the wings of an eagle. She was mythicized as treacherous and merciless,and was killing and eating those who couldn't answer her riddle. The mythical creature had been appeared in numerous tales but one standing out was the famous story of Oedipus.
The Sphinx was the emblem of the ancient city state of Chios. At the end of the 7th century B.C., Chios became one of the first cities to strike coins, establishing the winged sphinx as its symbol, a conspicuous display of their influence and their vast wealth.
